As of midday Friday, Zhengzhou has reported 14 newly confirmed COVID-19 cases and another 25 new asymptomatic cases. The city is undergoing a week of severe restrictions to bring its outbreak under control. CGTN"s reporter Xia Ruixue visited the city to check on how residents are coping.

Early in the morning, tons of vegetables, meat, and fruits arrive at one of Zhengzhou"s largest wholesale markets.

It"s much busier than usual and comes as the city saw a resurgence of COVID-19 infections this week.

After struggling with supplies during the recent outbreaks, Zhengzhou officials have taken swift action to make sure the daily needs of residents are met.

LI YULEI Vice Manager Wanbang International Logistic of Agricultural Products "Our market can provide a total of 438,000 tons of food supplies per day. The stock can support local residents" needs for 10-20 days. And we keep purchasing more than before to cope with the pandemic."

Zhengzhou is the provincial capital of central"s China Henan, one of the country"s largest grain producers. It also has the largest number of agricultural processing companies. During the pandemic, these food manufacturers maximized production to produce dumplings, noodles, steamed bread and other goods for local residents.

At the same time, the local authorities are also trying to ensure delivery services are more resilient and efficient.

YAN JUJIAN Vice Manager of Marketing, Sanquan Food Co., Ltd. "We got an increasing number of orders when the outbreak hit the city, as people stockpile a few times the normally needed amount of food. So we work 24/7 to ensure the need. Thanks to the local commerce department to improve the logistics services, now it takes only 6-8 hours for our products to reach to the retailers. That"s way much quicker than before."

LOCAL RESIDENT "I think the supplies are sufficient. See? I bought a lot today. And price is fair."

Every day, one person from each family can go out to buy daily necessities and food once, while residents have been urged to work from home. The week-long lockdown, which began Wednesday the fourth of May, has been brought in to deal with the more infectious Omicron variant.

The aim is to bring the outbreak under control within the 7-day lockdown.

XIA RUIXUE Zhengzhou "Maintaining stable food supplies is very critical during the pandemic. Both residents and officials in Zhengzhou seem more confident and better prepared this time around. Xia Ruixue, CGTN, Zhengzhou, Henan Province."
